Severe weather conditions in Western Norway are causing travel disruptions, including a landslide that has closed a section of the E16 highway and halted train service on the Bergen Line.
On March 12, 2026, a mud and debris slide covered a portion of the E16 near Vaksdal, according to reports. While the slide primarily impacted a side road, “Langhellevegen,” a significant amount of material spilled onto the E16, blocking traffic in the direction of Voss. Authorities stated that the slide is not believed to be more than half a meter high and no individuals or vehicles were affected.
Traffic is moving slowly through the area, but tunnel access remains open. The incident underscores the vulnerability of transportation infrastructure during periods of heavy rainfall and strong winds.
Separately, a landslide has also disrupted rail service on the Bergen Line near Trengereid station. Bane Nor, the Norwegian railway infrastructure manager, has closed the line between Trengereid and Arna while crews assess the situation. “We are clarifying the situation now. This will accept time,” the agency said in a statement.
The disruptions arrive as a powerful storm brings heavy precipitation and wind gusts up to 33 meters per second to the region, prompting warnings to secure outdoor objects like trampolines and boats, according to local news sources. The combination of factors is creating challenging conditions for travelers throughout Western Norway.
