Norwegian Film Wins First BAFTA Award – “Affeksjonsverdi” Gains Recognition

We are updating this story.

A Norwegian film has made history, winning an award at the British Academy Film Awards (BAFTA) for the first time ever.

“Norwegians are usually better at skiing,” Joachim Trier joked from the stage.

The British equivalent of the Oscars took place Sunday, February 22, at 6 p.m. Local time.

Despite being considered frontrunners, Stellan Skarsgård and Inga Ibsdotter Lilleaas did not win Best Supporting Actor and Actress, respectively.

Instead, Sean Penn, for his performance in “One Battle After Another,” and Wunmi Mosaku, for her work in “Sinners,” took home the awards for Best Supporting Actor and Actress.

However, “Affeksjonsverdi” (Sentimental Value) still has a chance to win in several categories.

“For me, these kinds of events are always a little scary, but I’ve now met the people behind the other considerable films several times, and that makes it easier to relax,” Renate Reinsve told the Associated Press shortly before the ceremony.

There was significant anticipation surrounding “Affeksjonsverdi” ahead of tonight’s BAFTA Awards. No other Norwegian film has come close to receiving eight nominations.

“It’s still quite wild. It hasn’t fully sunk in yet,” Inga Ibsdotter Lilleaas told the Associated Press.

NRK’s film critic, Birger Vestmo, predicted that “Affeksjonsverdi” could win up to four BAFTA awards.

“The BAFTA jury has a different composition than, for example, the Oscar Academy. There’s a larger proportion of European filmmakers on it.”

That prediction didn’t come to fruition.

“One Battle After Another,” “Sinners,” and “Frankenstein” were the films that took home the most awards.

Prince William and Princess Kate were in attendance, despite the ongoing scrutiny surrounding the British royal family following the arrest of Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor. The royal presence underscores the event’s significance within British culture.

Warming Up for the Oscars

The BAFTA Awards serve as a strong precursor to the Oscars, and could potentially indicate how the films will perform there, according to Vestmo.

The ceremony is the highlight of the period in the film world known as Award Season, where many awards shows follow one another.

In January, Stellan Skarsgård won the award for Best Supporting Actor at the Golden Globes in Los Angeles.

Critics questioned the use of public funds for a film that neither had a British director, a British production company, nor a British story.

Whether that will play a role in the outcome remains to be seen, according to Vestmo.
