Nothing CEO: Apps Will Disappear – AI is the Future

Nothing CEO Carl Pei is challenging the conventional smartphone experience, arguing that the era of apps is nearing its end. Speaking at the South by Southwest (SXSW) conference, Pei predicted a future where artificial intelligence agents will replace the need for individual applications, fundamentally changing how users interact with their devices.

Pei’s vision centers on a shift from app-centric interfaces to AI-driven systems that proactively understand and fulfill user needs. Instead of navigating between multiple apps to complete tasks like booking travel or scheduling meetings, the phone will anticipate requests and execute them automatically in the background. This concept reflects a broader trend in the tech industry toward more intuitive and personalized AI experiences.

“In terms of AI in software, I believe people should understand that apps are going to disappear,” Pei stated. “If you’re a founder or a startup and your app is where your core value lies, that will be disrupted, whether you like it or not. If you have a highly strong brand or a very strong distribution, you could delay it by a little bit, but otherwise, I would advise everybody to think differently.”

Pei elaborated on this idea, suggesting that developers should consider opening up their application programming interfaces (APIs) to allow AI agents seamless access. He cautioned against attempts to mimic human interaction through AI, stating, “I’ve seen on smartphones that some companies are trying to mimic the human touch on smartphones. So you have an AI agent that’s trying to click like Uber and enter on the keyboard the address you’re going to go to. That’s not the future. The future is not the agent using a human interface. You need to create an interface for the agent to use. I think that’s the more future-proof way of doing it.”

According to 9to5Google, Pei’s comments build on previous statements about an AI-first device, a concept that helped secure $200 million in Series C funding for Nothing last year. The company is aiming to develop a smartphone powered by AI and personalization technology that requires minimal user oversight. This ambition reflects a growing belief that AI can move beyond simple task execution to anticipate and fulfill user intentions.

Pei also pointed out that the fundamental smartphone interface—home screens filled with app icons—has remained largely unchanged since the introduction of the iPhone. He believes this system is outdated and inefficient, paving the way for a more intelligent and integrated operating system. The shift towards AI agents could streamline the mobile experience and unlock latest levels of personalization.

As WIONews reported on March 19, 2026, Pei’s vision is gaining traction as companies explore the potential of AI to reshape the mobile landscape. Nothing is actively working to position itself at the forefront of this transformation.
