Honolulu Planning Commission to Discuss Signage Rules for Apartment Districts

The Honolulu Planning Commission will hold a public hearing on Wednesday, October 29, 2025, to consider amendments to city ordinances regarding signage for businesses located in Apartment and Apartment Mixed-Use districts.

Resolution No. 24-223 proposes changes to Chapter 21 of the Revised Ordinances of Honolulu, allowing for additional signage options for businesses within these districts. The Department of Planning and Permitting (DPP) has voiced its support for the intent of the resolution, which aims to update the Land Use Ordinance (LUO) found in ROH §21-7.40(d). These changes could impact the visibility and economic opportunities for businesses in densely populated areas of Honolulu.

The public hearing will be held at 1:30 p.m. at the Fasi Municipal Building, with both in-person and remote participation options available via WebEx. Individuals wishing to provide oral testimony are encouraged to register in advance by emailing [email protected] by 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday, October 28, 2025. Written testimony can be submitted via email, fax, or mail, with details available on the DPP website. For more information on submitting testimony, see the City and County of Honolulu’s guidelines on city services.

Meeting materials are available for public inspection at the Department of Planning and Permitting and online. The Commission will take action on the resolution after the public hearing is closed, and the meeting will be recorded for later viewing.
