A 47-year-old nurse in the United Kingdom died in March 2024 after a hospital initially misdiagnosed her heart attack as trapped gas, according to reports. The case highlights potential failings within the UK’s National Health Service (NHS) and has prompted a review of emergency protocols.

Paula Ivers arrived at Tameside Hospital experiencing severe chest pain, which her partner, Simon Norbury, said she described as worse than the pain she felt during childbirth. Despite her complaints, medical staff diagnosed her with acid reflux and excess gas, and she was discharged.

Ivers reportedly informed the medical team that her father had died of a heart attack at age 40, but this family history was not taken into consideration during her initial assessment.

Three days later, Ivers was found unconscious by her 9-year-old daughter and was rushed back to the hospital, where she was pronounced dead. A subsequent autopsy revealed she had died from a thoracic aortic dissection – a life-threatening condition where a tear occurs in the wall of the aorta, the body’s main artery. According to the Mayo Clinic, this condition can cause internal bleeding and is often fatal.

Lesley Ivers, Paula’s sister, expressed outrage at the misdiagnosis, stating, “It’s a cruel irony that she was an advocate for the NHS and yet, when she needed it most, she was failed in the worst possible way.”

The family has filed a negligence lawsuit against the NHS, and the case is currently under investigation by British authorities. As a result of the incident, officials have mandated the creation of new protocols to prevent similar tragedies from occurring in the future. The development underscores the importance of thorough medical evaluations and consideration of patient history in emergency situations.
