German Nurse Sentenced to Life for Murder of 10 Patients

A German court today sentenced a 44-year-old palliative care nurse to life in prison for the murder of 10 patients and the attempted murder of 27 others through lethal injections, a case highlighting growing concerns about patient safety in healthcare settings.

The verdict was delivered by a court in Aachen, finding the man guilty of offenses committed between December 2023 and May 2024 at a hospital in Wuerselen, near Aachen. Prosecutors accused the nurse of acting as “master of life and death” over those in his care, administering large doses of sedatives and painkillers – including morphine and midazolam – primarily to reduce his workload during night shifts. The court determined the offenses demonstrated a “particular severity of guilt,” precluding the possibility of early release after 15 years.

During the trial, which began in March, prosecutors presented evidence indicating the nurse suffered from a personality disorder and displayed a complete lack of compassion for his patients, offering no remorse throughout the proceedings. They described him as working “without enthusiasm” and showing “irritation” when patients required a higher level of care. This case bears similarities to other recent incidents, such as the case of Lucy Letby, a neonatal nurse in England convicted of murdering seven babies.

The nurse had been employed at the hospital in Wuerselen since 2020, having previously worked in Cologne since completing his training in 2007. Authorities have indicated that exhumations have been conducted to identify potential additional victims, and further trials may be pursued. Germany previously saw a similar case with Niels Hoegel, who was sentenced to life in 2019 for murdering 85 patients.

Prosecutors stated they will continue investigations and potentially bring further charges as new evidence emerges.
