Nvidia has released DLSS 5, the latest iteration of its Deep Learning Super Sampling technology, aiming to boost visual fidelity in video games using artificial intelligence. However, the launch has been met with a largely negative response from gamers.

The novel technology, unveiled at GTC Live 2026, utilizes a “real-time neural rendering model” to enhance lighting and materials in games. Nvidia claims DLSS 5 represents “the most significant breakthrough in computer graphics since the debut of real-time ray tracing in 2018.” This advancement comes as the industry continually seeks ways to push graphical boundaries and deliver more immersive experiences.

Early reactions, particularly following a detailed breakdown by Digital Foundry, have been critical. The core of the controversy centers around the aesthetic changes DLSS 5 introduces. According to reports, the technology appears to apply a significant “beauty filter” effect to characters and environments, resulting in an overly polished and, for many, unnatural gaze.

Digital Foundry’s analysis showed that characters in Resident Evil Requiem and Starfield undergo a noticeable transformation when DLSS 5 is enabled. The technology doesn’t alter the underlying geometry or textures, but the resulting visuals have been described as “yassified” and reminiscent of AI-generated images. Bethesda’s Todd Howard reportedly signed off on the Starfield visuals with the new technology, stating that this is how he envisioned the game being seen.

Nvidia showcased DLSS 5 with several giveaways, including opportunities to win PCs and GPUs featuring the RTX 5080 and RTX 5070. These included promotions with GIGABYTE, MAINGEAR, MSI, PNY and ZOTAC GAMING. Resident Evil Requiem is now available on Steam with support for path tracing, DLSS 4 with Multi Frame Generation, DLSS Ray Reconstruction, and NVIDIA Reflex, according to Nvidia.

The release of DLSS 5 comes as Nvidia prepares to launch its RTX 50-series graphics cards. The technology is exclusive to these upcoming GPUs, potentially creating a divide between players who can afford the upgrade and those who cannot.
