The maritime security center in Oman announced that the oil tanker SKYLIGHT was targeted approximately 5 nautical miles north of the port of Khassab in the Musandam Governorate.

The UK Maritime Operations also confirmed receiving reports of an incident occurring two nautical miles north of Kumzar in Oman.

Footage circulating on social media platforms, which has been verified, shows the ship ablaze following the attack.

The Omani center added that the tanker’s crew of 20 individuals – including 15 Indian nationals and 5 Iranian nationals – have been evacuated. Initial reports indicate that four crew members sustained injuries and have been transported for medical treatment.

According to navigational data provided by MarineTraffic, the tanker, registration number (9330020), departed the port of Basra on January 11, 2026, and docked at the port of Khassab, Oman, on February 22.

Data monitored by Al Jazeera’s open-source unit shows that the last known location of the vessel, managed by the UAE-based company (RED SEA SHIP MANAGEMENT LLC), was approximately 5 nautical miles from the port about six hours ago, consistent with the reported location of the attack.

Prior to the incident, Reuters reported receiving messages on high frequency from the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, prohibiting any ships from crossing the Strait of Hormuz.

Reuters reported that at least 150 tankers loaded with oil and gas were halted in the Gulf waters outside the Strait of Hormuz. The incident comes amid heightened regional tensions and could further disrupt global energy supplies.
