Prague – After a nine-year standoff, Tomio Okamura, the current Speaker of the Chamber of Deputies, has accepted an invitation to appear on the Czech Television program *Questions of Václav Moravec* on March 8, according to reports from multiple Czech news outlets.
The invitation marks a significant shift after years of Okamura alleging that Czech Television deliberately excluded him from the program. Last year, the Czech Television Council even considered whether this exclusion constituted a violation of fair competition among political parties. Czech Television’s Director General Hynek Chudárek stated in November that Okamura had not been invited on the show since 2017.
The debate is expected to be a contentious one. Moravec himself has described the upcoming discussion as “the most interesting discussion” he’s had, suggesting a potentially heated exchange. This comes after a period of internal debate within Czech Television regarding Okamura’s inclusion, which led to intervention from the broadcaster’s leadership and the dismissal of a long-time dramaturg.
Moravec previously defended his decision not to invite Okamura as a matter of principle and editorial independence, stating that the program focuses on “opinion and political currents in society” and aims for balance in its coverage. However, the decision to now include Okamura underscores the ongoing scrutiny of Czech Television’s impartiality.
Some observers anticipate little actual agreement between Moravec and Okamura, predicting each will maintain their own positions. A commentator for Seznam Zprávy suggested Okamura’s appearance may lead to a more aggressive tone from the politician. The situation highlights the challenges facing public broadcasters in maintaining neutrality although providing a platform for diverse political voices.
Meanwhile, other political figures have also been invited to participate in upcoming episodes of *Questions of Václav Moravec*, including former Speakers of the Chamber of Deputies Miroslava Němcová and Markéta Pekarová Adamová, as well as Radko Vondráček, according to reports.
