Oklahoma to Pad Owen Field Wall After Player Injury
The University of Oklahoma plans to add padding to a brick wall surrounding Owen Field after wide receiver Keontez Lewis collided with it during Saturday’s game against Kent State.
The incident occurred in the first quarter of the 44-0 victory when a pass thrown by Michael Hawkins Jr. was slightly overthrown, causing Lewis to run into an unpadded section of the wall beyond the end zone. Lewis was attended to by medical staff for approximately ten minutes before being carted off the field. Fortunately, Oklahoma coach Brent Venables reported yesterday that Lewis is recovering well, stating, “I was terrified, because it didn’t look good at all. Really fortunate, all things considered — very fortunate. He’s in great spirits and feeling much better. Remarkably, really not even a scratch.”
Most of the brick wall encircling the field lacks padding and is positioned relatively close to the playing surface, raising concerns about player safety. Coach Venables indicated that the university is addressing the issue, saying, “I don’t know exactly when or how much and all of that,” but added, “I think they’re going to put some padding around that brick area where we’re vulnerable… That’s what I was told.” This move comes as college football programs increasingly prioritize player safety amid growing awareness of concussion risks; you can learn more about concussion prevention from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Lewis has been a key contributor to the Oklahoma offense this season, with 17 receptions for 210 yards and two touchdowns. The team is currently 4-0 and preparing for their next game against their upcoming opponent. Officials have not yet announced a timeline for the completion of the padding installation.
