A container ship was struck by an unknown projectile and caught fire Wednesday in the Strait of Ormuz, according to reports from the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO). The incident is the latest in a series of concerning events in the critical waterway, raising regional tensions.

The UKMTO reported that the crew of the vessel has abandoned ship and all personnel are accounted for, with no injuries reported. No environmental damage has been noted as a result of the incident, which occurred approximately two nautical miles north of Oman.

“A container vessel has been struck by an unknown projectile just above the waterline, igniting a fire in the engine room. The crew has abandoned the vessel and all are located and report no injuries,” the organization stated.

This incident marks the third report of attacks or suspicious activity affecting maritime navigation in the Strait of Ormuz or the Persian Gulf on Wednesday. Earlier in the day, the UKMTO reported an “attack” on a ship east of Fujairah, United Arab Emirates and a separate report of “suspicious activity” near the Strait of Ormuz following a reported explosion near another vessel.

That earlier incident occurred roughly 157 miles east of Muscat, Oman, and authorities are investigating. Both the ship and its crew were reported safe.

Adding to the heightened alert, Brigadier General Ebrahim Yabari of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard warned Tuesday on state television that Iran would not allow “a single drop of oil” to abandon the region and threatened to set fire to any ship attempting to transit the Strait of Ormuz. The statement underscores the potential for escalation in the region.

The UKMTO operates a Voluntary Reporting Scheme (VRS) within the Voluntary Reporting Area (VRA) outlined in UKHO Maritime Security Chart Q6099 and serves as the primary point of contact for emergency response, according to its website. Recent incidents reported by the UKMTO can be found here.
