Ludwig Göransson Wins Original Music Oscar

Swedish composer Ludwig Göransson has won the Oscar for Best Original Music for Sinners. French composer Alexandre Desplat, who composed the music for Frankenstein, did not win.

This is the Swedish musician’s third Oscar, having previously been recognized for Black Panther and Oppenheimer.

The Oscar for Best Sound went to the team behind F1.

Documentaries Tackle Tough Issues, Seize Home Oscars

From racial tensions and school shootings to abortion and the prison system, this year’s nominated documentary shorts and features offered unflinching looks at American society.

All the empty rooms, by Joshua Seftel and Conall Jones, won the Oscar for Best Documentary Short Film, focusing on the empty rooms of young Americans lost to gun violence.

Mr Nobody contre Poutine, from David Borenstein and Russian filmmaker Pavel Talankin, took home the Oscar for Best Documentary. “Our film talks about how you can lose your country. While working on this film, we realized that you can lose your country through small acts of abandonment. When a government assassinates people in our streets. When oligarchs seize the media and control how we produce and consume information,” they said.

The win marked a rare moment of political commentary during an otherwise polished evening. Jimmy Kimmel, who presented the awards, offered a few pointed remarks about the documentary on Melania Trump.

“Frankenstein” Honored for Production Design

Guillermo Del Toro’s Frankenstein added another Oscar to its tally, winning for Best Production Design – the film’s third win of the night.

Avatar: The Seed Bearer, from James Cameron, won the Oscar for Best Visual Effects, marking the third time a film in the Avatar franchise has received the honor.

Tribute Paid to Rob Reiner and Those Lost

Billy Crystal, star of When Harry Met Sally, delivered a tribute to Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele Singer Reiner, who were tragically murdered in December 2025 by their son.

The tribute opened a segment honoring those who passed away in 2025, including Claudia Cardinale, Robert Redford, remembered by Barbra Streisand, his co-star in The Way We Were, Diane Keaton, Catherine O’Hara, Michael Madsen, and Robert Duvall.

“Sinners” Wins Best Original Screenplay

The first Oscar of the night went to Sinners, which was nominated 16 times this evening.

Ryan Coogler has won his first Oscar for the screenplay of Sinners.

Paul Thomas Anderson Wins Best Adapted Screenplay

Paul Thomas Anderson’s There Will Be Blood won the Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay. The film is based on the novel by Thomas Pynchon.

Anderson dedicated the award to his children, saying, “This is my way of apologizing to you, for subjecting you to a world of chaos. This film is an encouragement to this generation to let common sense prevail.”

Sean Penn Wins Best Supporting Actor

Sean Penn has won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor for his role in There Will Be Blood. The actor did not attend the ceremony to accept the award, which was presented by Kieran Culkin.

Penn beat out Benicio Del Toro, his co-star in There Will Be Blood, Delroy Lindo (Sinners), Jacob Elordi (Frankenstein), and Stellan Skarsgard (Sentimental Value).

This is the third Oscar for the actor, who previously won for Mystic River in 2004 and Harvey Milk in 2009, making him the eighth person in history to win at least three Academy Awards.

Guillermo Del Toro’s Frankenstein—which did not receive any nominations for Del Toro himself—has won its first two Oscars of the night, for Best Costume Design and Best Makeup and Hairstyling.

Mike Hill, the film’s makeup artist, specifically thanked Jacob Elordi, who plays the creature, noting that he “spent 400 hours getting made up.”

“KPop Demon Hunters” Wins Best Animated Feature

French films were shut out of the Best Animated Feature category, as KPop Demon Hunters took home the prize. The Netflix hit broke numerous records and became a global phenomenon, beating out Disney’s Zootopia 2.

“I’m really sorry it took so long for a film like this to be seen, but it’s finally here, which means future generations won’t have to wait for it. This is for Korea, and Koreans,” said co-director Maggie Kang.

Amy Madigan Wins Best Supporting Actress

Amy Madigan has won the first Oscar of the night for her role in Vanishing. It’s her first Oscar win for her performance as Gladys Lilly. The film grossed one million admissions in France.

With heavy makeup reminiscent of a clown, the 75-year-old actress beat out a strong field of competitors, including Teyana Taylor (There Will Be Blood), Wunmi Mosaku (Sinners), and Sentimental Value stars Elle Fanning and Inga Ibsdotter Lilleaas.

The win defied a trend of the Oscars often overlooking horror films.

Caviar, Sushi, and Pork Chops on the Menu

Thirty kilograms of caviar, 100 kilograms of pork chops, dozens of kilograms of truffles, smoked salmon, and chicken were prepared to feed Hollywood’s elite. Chef Wolfgang Puck is in charge of the menu tonight. “We’re preparing about 25,000 dishes,” he told the AFP on Tuesday during a menu presentation to the press.
