Pakistan’s military has again targeted the Afghan capital, Kabul, with airstrikes, prompting accusations from the Taliban government that a drug rehabilitation clinic was deliberately struck. The escalating conflict between the neighboring nations raises concerns about regional stability.
According to Taliban spokesperson Zabihullah Mujahid on X, the strikes resulted in casualties among patients undergoing treatment at the clinic. Deputy Taliban spokesperson Hamdullah Fitrat later stated the death toll had risen to 400, with an additional 250 people injured.
The Pakistani Ministry of Information responded on X, directly addressing the Taliban spokesperson’s claims, stating that attacks targeted military facilities, infrastructure supporting terrorism and equipment and ammunition depots in Kabul and the eastern province of Nangarhar. The ministry asserted that the strikes were carried out “precisely” to avoid collateral damage.
The claims made by both sides remain unverified.
The recent attacks follow renewed fighting between the two countries that broke out in late February. Islamabad accuses the Taliban of harboring terrorists who carry out attacks in Pakistan, allegations Kabul denies. Tensions between the neighboring countries have been escalating following a series of reciprocal attacks. The development underscores growing regional tensions and the potential for further escalation.
