KNVB Clears Dean James and Go Ahead Eagles in ‘Passportgate’ Eligibility Ruling

The KNVB has officially closed its investigation into the “Passportgate” controversy, ruling that neither defender Dean James nor his club, Go Ahead Eagles, will face disciplinary sanctions. The decision, announced on Wednesday, April 8, 2026, by the KNVB’s independent professional football prosecutor, brings a resolution to a dispute that has caused significant unrest across the league.

KNVB Clears Dean James and Go Ahead Eagles in 'Passportgate' Eligibility Ruling

The conflict ignited following a 6-0 victory for Go Ahead Eagles over NAC Breda. The Breda-based club submitted a formal request to have the match declared void, claiming that Dean James and Go Ahead Eagles were ineligible for selection. The challenge centered on James swapping his Dutch nationality for Indonesian citizenship in March 2025, a move that, under Dutch law, meant he was not automatically permitted to play.

In a press release, the KNVB clarified that while the IND (Immigration and Naturalisation Service) established that James had indeed lost his Dutch citizenship—making him ineligible since March 2025—the professional football prosecutor will not take disciplinary action. The association noted that neither the player nor the club were aware of the automatic legal consequences associated with the change of nationality. The KNVB further emphasized that it is not the role of the prosecutor to determine a person’s nationality.

The fallout from the “Passportgate” scandal extended beyond Go Ahead Eagles, impacting other players and clubs. Tjaronn Chery of NEC and Etiënne Vaessen of FC Groningen were both barred from training during the height of the controversy. While NAC Breda may not be satisfied with the KNVB’s decision, the league has signaled that clubs must now be aware of these regulations with immediate effect.

Vaessen has already resolved his status, collecting his EU sticker at FC Groningen and appearing in a 0-2 match against Telstar. Meanwhile, the broader discourse surrounding the scandal has seen other names surface, including Fardy Bachdim, and critics including a PSM Makassar legend who has criticized the PSSI’s handling of passport issues in the Dutch league.

With the “Passportgate” scandal now effectively fizzled out, Go Ahead Eagles are cleared to field both Dean James and Richonell Margaret as normal for their upcoming fixture this Saturday. The ruling ensures the club avoids any points deduction or match voidance, allowing them to move forward with their season intact.
