“A normal period shouldn’t stop your life,” says media personality sharing adenomyosis diagnosis.
A well-known media figure is speaking out about her decades-long struggle with painful and debilitating periods, hoping to raise awareness about adenomyosis and encourage others to seek medical attention for severe menstrual symptoms. The individual, who wishes to remain unnamed, first experienced intensely painful periods during a school trip to the island of Ameland. “With all the second-form classes, we went for a midweek to Ameland and, sure enough, on day two it happened. My mother had packed one sanitary pad in my weekend bag. Just one,” she recalled. “I even joked with her at home, ‘Oh Mom, that would be a really strange coincidence.’ Well, it was. And it was also remarkably miserable.”
For years, she battled pain, blood clots, and heavy bleeding. “Breasts that hurt just looking at them, cramps in my stomach and lower back. And the infamous ‘sandbags’ are still there,” she explained. “I can handle a lot, so I manage the pain reasonably well with painkillers.”
Eventually, she received a diagnosis of adenomyosis. “On the one hand, the diagnosis was confronting. It was a relief,” she shared. “So I’m not crazy or hysterical. There’s really something wrong with my periods.” Adenomyosis occurs when the tissue that normally lines the uterus grows into the muscular wall of the uterus, causing heavy, painful periods.
The individual is now taking medication to reduce the heavy bleeding and is sharing her story to warn other women. “So, from woman to woman: if you or your daughter have extremely painful, heavy, or irregular periods, speak up. Due to the fact that a normal period shouldn’t stop your life.” She previously shared her hope to have another child, a goal that may be impacted by her condition.
