A novel season of the animated series Pequeñ@ Astrónom@ is set to explore the intersection of scientific biography and groundbreaking discoveries that have shaped our understanding of the universe. The project, which launched in 2024, will return in 2026 with new episodes covering topics ranging from orbital laws to radio astronomy.
The second season is backed by funding from the Fondo ALMA ANID and will be produced in collaboration with Universidad Andrés Bello. The series aims to familiarize students with scientific language, integrating geometry, algebra, and astrophysical phenomena with a visual style consistent with its first season.
Ricardo Demarco, an astronomer and academic at UNAB, is leading the new cycle. He describes a connecting thread running through the lives and work of Kepler, Newton, Emmy Noether, Einstein, Jocelyn Bell, and Vera Rubin, alongside the story of Chilean astronomer Mónica Rubio, National Prize for Sciences. “The emphasis is not only on transmitting data, but on showing how science is built through persistent questions and rigorous methods, a message that runs through each chapter, but in an intriguing and entertaining way,” Demarco emphasized.
Pequeñ@ Astrónom@ is expanding beyond digital content with outreach events planned in Santiago, Concepción, and the San Pedro de Atacama region, featuring science communicators like José Maza. These events will bring the project into schools and museums, aiming to spark scientific curiosity through the stories behind current knowledge – from mathematical pattern-seeking to the detection of signals from dying stars.
The project team combines audiovisual direction, scientific consulting, and sustained work in animation, sound, and musical composition, with each character featuring their own unique soundtrack. The first season garnered nearly half a million views on social media and fostered a growing community that the creators hope to expand.
For 2026, the goal is to establish Pequeñ@ Astrónom@ as a national reference in science communication, supported by in-person activities, an expanded digital strategy, and outreach to educational and outreach spaces with an inclusive approach. The series’ creators are planning to release the first chapter of the new season soon via their social media platforms: @serie.pequeastro on Instagram or on their Facebook page Pequeño Astrónomo.
