Cost of Basic Food Basket in Lima Surpasses S/ 1,800, Raising Financial Strain for Families
Families in Lima are facing increasing financial pressure as the cost of the basic food basket has climbed above 1,800 soles, according to the latest data from the National Institute of Statistics and Informatics (INEI). The report reveals that households now require up to an additional 200 soles per month to maintain essential nutrition.
The price surge is being driven by a variety of staples. As of April 2026, costs for bread, chicken, potato, and cassava continue to rise. This upward trend in essential goods underscores the growing difficulty for low-income residents to afford a balanced diet.
Beyond these staples, there are mounting fears regarding the unchecked prices of corn, wheat, and soy, which officials worry could lead to further food price inflation. Market volatility remains a concern as observers track the current prices of fruits and vegetables across various local markets.
The rising cost of living presents a stark contrast to recent macroeconomic indicators. According to INEI, Peru’s economy grew by 3.62% in October 2025, marking 22 consecutive months of expansion. However, the increase in the cost of the basic food basket suggests that economic growth is not uniformly easing the financial burden on urban households.
To address these challenges and improve data accuracy, the INEI is working to consolidate a digital statistical system designed to modernize agricultural information. This move underscores the government’s effort to better monitor food production and pricing trends to mitigate future shocks to the consumer market.
