A Peruvian congresswoman is facing scrutiny following allegations that a shelter associated with her is perpetuating abuse against young girls. Milagros Jáuregui, a member of the Peruvian Congress representing Lima since July 27, 2021, has been the subject of calls for investigation into the “Casa del Padre” shelter, which she previously oversaw as pastor and vice president.
The controversy centers on claims that the shelter does not recognize girls who are victims of sexual abuse as such, effectively failing to provide appropriate care and support. Critics allege this inaction constitutes a continuation of the abuse. La República first reported on the allegations.
Jáuregui, who was elected to Congress in 2021 with 63,003 votes – making her the second most-voted woman in the Peruvian Parliament’s bicentennial – has described herself as a defender of life and family. Her website states her work in Congress focuses on these principles. She currently presides over the Commission of Woman and Family.
In addition to the shelter allegations, Jáuregui has faced criticism for her legislative stances. She has authored bills supporting heteronormativity and advocated for the removal of gender-based curriculum from schools, arguing for a focus on “science, not ideology.” She has also promoted legislation addressing violence against men, contending that it is equally important to acknowledge. According to her Wikipedia page, she has been a pastor for over thirty years.
Prosecutors are now being asked to investigate the shelter, with concerns raised about the “grave risk” posed to the girls residing there. Infobae reports that a formal request has been made to the Fiscalía to launch an investigation.
