Mark Wahlberg’s Performance in New Shane Black Film ‘Play Dirty’ Draws Criticism

Actor Mark Wahlberg’s latest role in director Shane Black’s heist thriller, Play Dirty, streaming today on Prime Video, is being met with reviews questioning his performance and its potential impact on his career trajectory.

Play Dirty, Black’s fifth self-directed feature and first since 2018’s The Predator, features Wahlberg as “Parker,” a character previously portrayed by actors including Lee Marvin and Robert Duvall. The film, based on novels by Donald E. Westlake, emphasizes comedy, but critics suggest Wahlberg’s performance feels perfunctory, overshadowed by co-stars LaKeith Stanfield and Rosa Salazar. This marks a departure from Wahlberg’s earlier critically acclaimed work, such as his 2006 Oscar nomination for The Departed.

The film’s release directly to streaming services may limit its reach, but the performance arrives at a time when Wahlberg’s recent film choices have yielded diminishing returns, following successes like Boogie Nights (1997) and The Fighter (2010). Beyond artistic considerations, Wahlberg’s past, including documented violent racist hate crimes committed as a teenager, continues to be a subject of public discussion, adding another layer to the reception of his work. The incident, while addressed years ago, resurfaces periodically as societal awareness evolves, impacting public perception of his career.

While a career resurgence for Wahlberg isn’t impossible, the film’s reception suggests Play Dirty won’t be the vehicle for it. Representatives for Wahlberg have not yet commented on the reviews, but Prime Video indicated they are evaluating audience response to determine future projects with the actor.
