Facundo Imboden Reflects on Near-Miss with Chilean National Team and Club Career

Former Argentine defender Facundo Imboden has opened up about the “what ifs” of his professional journey, revealing that he came incredibly close to representing the Chilean national team on the international stage.

During a recent discussion regarding the upcoming Copa Libertadores 2026—one of the most prestigious club competitions in the Americas—Imboden shared his regret over a missed opportunity to switch his international allegiance. “I would have loved to play for Chile; I was exceptionally close to becoming naturalized, but it didn’t happen,” the veteran defender explained.

Beyond the international circuit, Imboden also reflected on his tenure with Universidad Católica. While he expressed overall pride in the career he built, he admitted that the circumstances of his departure from the club left a lingering sense of dissatisfaction.

“Having retired at Universidad Católica is the other thorn I have, but I am proud of the career I had,” Imboden confessed.
