PlayStation Portal Gains 1080p High Quality Mode in New Update
Sony has released a new software update for the PlayStation Portal, introducing a 1080p High Quality mode for both Remote Play and Cloud Streaming. The update, which began rolling out globally on March 18, 2026, aims to enhance the visual fidelity and overall user experience of the handheld streaming device.
The new 1080p High Quality mode allows players to enjoy games at a higher bitrate compared to the standard 1080p setting, resulting in a smoother and more detailed picture. To enable the feature, users can navigate to [Quick Menu] > [Max Resolution] and select [1080p High Quality] before restarting their Remote Play or Cloud Streaming session. This enhancement arrives as the gaming landscape increasingly focuses on delivering high-resolution experiences on portable devices.
According to the company, Cloud Streaming monthly users grew by 162% year-over-year in January 2026, and over 50% of PlayStation Portal users are now PlayStation Plus Premium subscribers. This suggests growing engagement with cloud-based gaming options. The PlayStation Portal launched in November 2023, initially offering a way to stream PS5 games from a user’s home console via Remote Play.
Since November 2025, PlayStation Plus Premium members have also been able to stream select digital PS5 games directly from the cloud. The new 1080p High Quality mode increases the maximum streaming bitrate from 15 to 25 Mbit/s, which should make the image look visibly sharper and more detailed. Testing has shown that the new mode delivers a clearer and cleaner image, particularly during local Remote Play, with latency measuring as low as one to two milliseconds in some cases.
The update also includes several refinements to improve usability and reduce friction during Cloud Streaming sessions. This move by Sony underscores the company’s commitment to improving the PlayStation Portal experience and expanding its appeal to a wider audience.
