Two people were seriously injured early Sunday morning after a vehicle fleeing police crashed and rolled over on a rural road in western Sweden. The incident underscores the dangers of high-speed chases, particularly in adverse weather conditions.

According to reports, the crash occurred around midnight on County Road 156 between Kinna and Hyssna, in the municipality of Marks. Police initiated a pursuit after the driver of the vehicle failed to stop during a routine traffic check. Visibility was severely limited due to heavy fog at the time.

“The police followed, but soon lost sight of the car because of the dense fog,” SVT Nyheter reported. Shortly after, officers discovered the vehicle had left the roadway and overturned.

Both occupants, a man and a woman in their 30s, sustained serious injuries. One was transported to the hospital by ambulance helicopter, whereas the other was taken by ground ambulance, Swedish daily Svenska Dagbladet reported.

Police have launched an investigation into the incident. The initial focus is on possible driving under the influence, but authorities indicated that additional charges may be filed as the investigation progresses, according to SVT.

Authorities are urging drivers to exercise extreme caution while operating vehicles in foggy or slippery conditions and to comply with police signals during traffic stops, Nyheter Sverige noted.
