Pope Leo XIV Expresses Gratitude to Dutch Florist Continuing 40-Year Vatican Tradition
Pope Leo XIV has shared a heartfelt thank you with a Dutch flower artist, marking a poignant moment in a botanical tradition that has spanned four decades. The gesture has deeply moved 80-year-old Piet, who has dedicated years of his life to beautifying the Holy Notice during the Easter season.
Piet, who was moved to tears after the Pope thanked him for the flowers, described the acknowledgment as a powerful moment. The florist’s work is part of a 40-year tradition of sending Easter flowers to the Vatican, a commitment Piet undertook given that he had the time and the courage to pursue such an ambitious project.
Beyond the interior arrangements, Piet was also responsible for the decorations for St. Peter’s Square. Reflecting on the design constraints, Piet noted that while he was not permitted to create a literal flag, the image of one is still visible within the floral display.
The interaction comes amid reports that Pope Leo XIV is doing well. Expressing his contentment, the Pontiff stated, “We are going home satisfied.”
This long-standing collaboration highlights the enduring cultural and artistic ties between Dutch craftsmanship and the spiritual center of Catholicism.
