Popular Echo Canyon Trail at Camelback Mountain Closed Due to Storm Damage

The Echo Canyon Trail at Camelback Mountain in Phoenix is temporarily closed, effective today, October 17, 2025, due to safety concerns stemming from recent storm-related erosion.

The Phoenix Parks and Recreation Department announced the closure yesterday, stating that an assessment of the trail is underway. Officials have not yet detailed the extent of the damage but emphasized the need to prioritize hiker safety. This closure impacts a key recreational area for both local residents and tourists.

“The recent storms have caused erosion along the trail that presents safety concerns,” said Phoenix Parks and Recreation Department Director Cynthia Aguilar. “We know Echo Canyon is one of our most popular hiking destinations, and we appreciate the community’s patience and cooperation as our team works to ensure that it is safe to hike the trail again.” Echo Canyon is known as the more challenging of the two trails on Camelback Mountain, featuring a steeper incline and more rocky terrain; the Cholla Trail remains open for those seeking a hike on the mountain. Park rangers are stationed at the Echo Canyon trailhead to inform visitors of the closure and prevent access to the trail. The Parks and Recreation Department recommends exploring alternative hiking locations within Phoenix, including Piestewa Peak, North Mountain, Dreamy Draw, Lookout Mountain, and South Mountain Park and Preserve. You can find more information about Phoenix parks and trails on the city’s official website.

The Parks and Recreation Department will provide updates on the trail’s reopening as the assessment progresses.
