A tragic carbon monoxide leak in Porcari, Italy, on Wednesday evening claimed the lives of four family members – a father, mother, and two children. The incident, which occurred at a home on Via Galgani, is under investigation, though authorities believe a malfunctioning boiler was the source of the deadly gas.
A fifth person, the brother of the family’s father, was hospitalized in critical condition after finding his relatives unresponsive. The victims have been identified as Arti Kola, 48; his wife, Jonida, 43; their son, Hajdar, 22; and their daughter, Xhesika, 15. First responders, including police officers, reported mild carbon monoxide poisoning but are not in life-threatening condition.
The scene discovered by emergency personnel was particularly heartbreaking: the family had apparently been preparing for dinner, with a fully set table. The brother of the father alerted authorities after being unable to reach his family by phone. Upon arrival, he and police officers were forced to break down the door to gain entry.
Inside, they found the four family members without signs of life.
The uncle subsequently lost consciousness due to carbon monoxide exposure and was transported to Cisanello Hospital while officers secured the scene and called for additional support.
The mayor of Porcari, Leonardo Fornaciari, arrived at the scene and expressed his deep sorrow over the loss, describing the tragedy as a devastating blow to the small community located near Lucca.
Prosecutors have launched an investigation and have seized the property as evidence. Investigators are working to determine if the boiler was properly registered, installed, and maintained, as required by law.
According to witnesses, Arti Kola purchased the home approximately three years ago, and the family had recently moved in after completing some renovations.
