A Portuguese teenager has been arrested in connection with the sexual abuse of a 12-year-old girl and subsequent online threats, authorities announced Wednesday, March 11, 2026. The case, which unfolded in the Algarve region of Portugal, underscores the growing concerns about online exploitation and its impact on young people.
Police said the 18-year-old suspect, who attended the same school as the victim but in different classes, initially contacted the girl through social media. According to a statement released by the Polícia Judiciária (PJ) of Portimão, he “convinced the child to meet him near the school entrance and then went with her to a secluded location nearby, along a deserted road where no vehicles circulate.”
Once alone, the suspect “convinced the child to engage in sexual acts,” police said. Fearing the girl would report the incident, he then allegedly threatened her online. Rumors of the abuse began circulating at the school, prompting the victim to confide in her mother, who then contacted authorities.
The crimes occurred in February and the suspect was taken into custody earlier this week. He is now facing charges of sexual abuse of a minor and making threats, and will be brought before a court to determine appropriate legal measures. The investigation, led by the PJ’s Criminal Investigation Department in Portimão, yielded “relevant and robust evidence” leading to the arrest, according to officials.
The suspect’s identity has not been released. The case remains under investigation.
