Years of legal challenges contesting data-sharing practices related to credit information have concluded for several banks, with prescription rulings ultimately nullifying €225 million in fines. But the benefits of pursuing legal recourse weren’t limited to avoiding penalties. Last year, banks successfully argued before the Constitutional Court that a solidarity surcharge was unconstitutional, requiring the reimbursement of funds contributed annually since 2020. This financial outcome contributed to a record profit year for seven of the largest banks in 2025.
