The Fall of a Royal: Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor Arrested Amid Epstein Scandal
The legal turmoil surrounding the former Duke of York has reached a critical breaking point. In February 2026, Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor was arrested on suspicions of misconduct in public office, a development directly linked to his ties to the late American financier and child sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.
This arrest is the latest in a series of rapid collapses for the former royal. In October 2025, the Epstein scandal escalated into a bitter turn for Andrew, resulting in him being stripped of his royal titles, styles, and honours. The removal included his birth title of prince as well as his peerage title of “Duke of York.”
The trajectory toward this downfall began years earlier with a disastrous media appearance. On November 16, 2019, the BBC’s news and current affairs programme Newsnight broadcast a 58-minute interview in which Emily Maitlis questioned Andrew about his relationship with Epstein. The interview was widely panned by both the public and the media, eventually leading Andrew to indefinitely withdraw from his public roles in May 2020.
Within the royal family, the fallout has created a complex divide. While Prince William reportedly showed compassion during a surprising phone call following the removal of Andrew’s titles, other reactions have been far more severe. The association with Epstein has been a point of contention for over a decade. In March 2011, BBC News reported that the friendship was generating a “steady stream of criticism,” with calls for Andrew to step down as a trade envoy. Scrutiny intensified after Sarah Ferguson revealed that Andrew had helped arrange for Epstein to pay off £15,000 of her debts. The relationship was further highlighted in December 2010, when the two were photographed together in Recent York City’s Central Park.
