Xbox Series X Outperforms PS5 Pro in Assassin’s Creed Unity Upgrade
In a surprising turn of events, the Xbox Series X is delivering a superior graphical experience to the PlayStation 5 Pro in the recently updated Assassin’s Creed Unity, according to a report from Digital Foundry. This outcome challenges typical expectations regarding console performance and highlights the complexities of game optimization across different hardware platforms. The gaming industry is continually pushing the boundaries of visual fidelity, and this case demonstrates that even older titles can benefit from optimized updates.

Digital Foundry’s analysis reveals that the Xbox Series X version of Assassin’s Creed Unity now outputs at a resolution of 2880×1620, exceeding the 2304×1296 resolution achieved by both the PS5 and PS5 Pro. Even as adjustments can be made to improve the image on the PS5 Pro, the Series X maintains a clear advantage due to its higher resolution. “Xbox Series X is by far and away the best option, with a 2880×1620 output – 75 percent of 4K on both axes. Unity predates TAA and it doesn’t use dynamic resolution scaling, so those extra pixels matter,” the report states.
Although the PlayStation 5 Pro achieves a slightly higher overall frame rate, the Xbox Series X benefits from Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) support. “The highest overall frame-rate is delivered by PlayStation 5 Pro, but to be honest, I’d still prefer Series X: Xbox’s system-level VRR works on back-compat games where PS5 does not,” Digital Foundry noted. This VRR capability, combined with the increased resolution, results in a smoother and more visually appealing experience on the Xbox Series X.
It’s essential to note that Assassin’s Creed Unity is a decade-vintage game, and this result doesn’t necessarily indicate a general performance advantage for the Xbox Series X over the PS5 Pro. However, it’s an interesting case where Xbox hardware has come out on top. The news isn’t as positive for Xbox Series S owners, as the small resolution boost to 960p isn’t considered significant, though the console does maintain a stable 60FPS performance.
