Apple has expanded its emoji library with the release of iOS 26.4, introducing 163 new options for iPhone and Android users. The update includes a revised Puerto Rican flag emoji, featuring a lighter shade of blue, and a host of new characters reflecting diverse interests and cultural references.

The new emojis are based on the Unicode 17 standard, approved in September 2025, and are rolling out now with iOS 26.4, with Android compatibility coming soon. Apple officially launched iOS 26.4 on March 26, 2026, delivering significant improvements to iPhone functionality alongside the emoji expansion. The addition of eight entirely new emoji concepts has captured much of the attention.

The New Emoji Lineup

The latest emoji set aims to broaden the spectrum of digital expression, incorporating elements of humor, popular culture, and the natural world. Here’s a closer look at the eight new additions:

  • Distorted Face: This emoji, depicting a face with bulging eyes, has drawn comparisons to imagery from Apple’s previous advertising campaigns. Originally proposed as the “inflated face,” it represents a range of emotions from surprise to artistic distortion.
  • Fight Cloud: Directly inspired by comic book visuals, this emoji represents a fight or conflict with a cloud of dust and accompanying stars and lightning bolts.
  • Ballet Dancer: Apple has opted for a gender-neutral design for this figure, complementing existing dance-themed emojis. Notably, the shoe color adjusts based on the selected skin tone.
  • Orca: The marine mammal, also known as the “killer whale,” now has a dedicated emoji, suitable for nature and environmental discussions.
  • Hairy Creature: Inspired by legends like Bigfoot or the Yeti, this emoji depicts a humanoid creature in the classic sighting pose.
  • Trombone: A welcome addition for music lovers and fans of wind instruments.
  • Landslide: Representing a mountain of falling rocks, this emoji can be used to discuss natural phenomena or metaphorical collapses.
  • Treasure Chest: A wooden chest overflowing with gold coins and jewels, ideal for symbolizing achievements or hidden secrets.

Beyond these eight core additions, the update includes a total of 163 variations, adding new skin tone options for existing emojis like wrestlers and people with bunny ears. This expansion reflects a continued effort to provide greater inclusivity and personalization in digital communication.

Availability and Compatibility

Users can access the new emojis by updating their devices through Settings > General > Software Update. It’s important to note that if a new emoji is sent to a user who hasn’t updated to iOS 26.4, it will appear as an empty box or question mark. The Unicode Consortium’s ongoing work to standardize emojis ensures broader compatibility across platforms, and these new options will also be available on Android devices in the near future.
