Radostin Vasilev, leader of the MECH party, dismissed claims that a recent trip to Dubai was connected to a meeting with Delian Peevski as “incredible legends.” Vasilev made the statement during a conversation with Nikolai Kolev on Eurocom television, clarifying that his visit was for personal reasons and professional obligations as a lawyer, but was extended due to canceled flights.
Vasilev was adamant that he has no connection to the chairman of the DPS, recalling past clashes with Peevski, including a warning that “everything will finish soon” for the current governing model.
The politician confirmed he returned to Bulgaria on a state-organized evacuation flight after submitting a request through official channels at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ crisis center. He said over 300 people were on board. Vasilev commented on the difficulties surrounding the organization and urged institutions not to differentiate between “politicians” and “organized tourists,” referencing reports of tour groups stranded in the Emirates.
During the broadcast, Vasilev sharply criticized President Rumen Radev, accusing him of legitimizing the influence of GERB through public appearances with the party’s mayors in Stara Zagora and Burgas. According to Vasilev, the president is losing credibility due to his advisors, Nikolai Koprinkov and Plamen Uzunov. This marks a shift in Vasilev’s rhetoric, as he previously viewed Radev as a potential partner. Now, Vasilev stated his party will not join the president’s project.
Regarding the domestic political situation, Vasilev described the caretaker cabinet as dependent on Boyko Borissov and Delian Peevski. He cited Borissov’s interference in the perform of the Minister of Defense and personnel policies in the water sector as examples. Vasilev believes the battle between key political players is often superficial, with the ultimate goal being the preservation of economic influence.
On the international stage, the MECH leader supported a neutral position regarding the conflict in the Middle East and called for reciprocity in relations with the United States. He proposed linking the use of military bases in Bulgaria to the lifting of visa requirements for Bulgarian citizens and the provision of military equipment. Vasilev likewise predicted a significant increase in electricity prices next year, criticizing the energy regulator and the energy ministry for a lack of clear answers to parliament.
