Rail Baltica: Pārbaude par iepirkumu un Daugavas tilta balstiem

Latvia’s government will launch two investigations into the Rail Baltica railway project, focusing on procurement practices and unfinished infrastructure.

Prime Minister Evika Siliņa announced the probes on Tuesday, March 10, 2026, following concerns raised about the project’s cost and transparency. One investigation will assess the procurement process managed by RB Rail, the joint venture overseeing the project, while the other will examine the stalled construction of bridge piers on the Daugava River and a railway overpass in Marupe.

“The public must have clear, detailed information on the decisions taken so far, their justification, and impact on the state budget, as well as the potential responsibility of the officials involved,” Siliņa said in a statement. The move underscores the government’s commitment to accountability as the massive infrastructure project progresses.

The investigations approach after reports surfaced alleging irregularities in a recent procurement process. According to a report from TV3’s “Nekā personīga” on March 8, 2026, a company was excluded from bidding on a contract for railway switches and expansion joints due to a technicality, despite submitting a bid approximately 267 million euros lower than other offers.

Siliņa has previously emphasized the importance of completing Rail Baltica, citing its significance for both security and economic development. However, she has also stressed the need for responsible and transparent implementation. The total cost of the project is currently estimated at EUR 23.8 billion across the Baltic states, a significant increase from a 2017 estimate of EUR 5.8 billion.

Rail Baltica aims to connect the Baltic states – Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania – with other European countries via a novel 870-kilometer, standard-gauge railway line capable of speeds up to 240 kilometers per hour. The project involves building a double-track, electrified railway for both passenger and freight transport.
