London prosecutors are pursuing the reinstatement of terrorism charges against Liam O’Hagan, lead vocalist for the Irish rap group Níkab, over an incident at a November 2024 concert. The case centers on allegations that a Hezbollah flag was displayed during the performance, raising complex questions about freedom of expression and the legal definition of supporting a proscribed organization. While initial charges were dismissed due to procedural errors, the Crown Prosecution Service is now arguing the case can proceed, setting the stage for a renewed legal battle with potential implications for artistic expression and political protest.

London – Prosecutors are seeking to reinstate terrorism charges against Liam O’Hagan, the vocalist for Irish rap group Níkab, for allegedly displaying a flag representing Hezbollah, the Iran-backed Lebanese organization, during a London concert. The initial case was dismissed last year.

O’Hagan, who performs under the stage name Mu Sharra, was originally accused of waving the banned Hezbollah flag during a November 2024 performance. The charges were dropped in September after the court determined they were initially brought without proper authorization from the Director of Public Prosecutions and the Attorney General, and after the legally mandated six-month timeframe had passed.

However, the Crown Prosecution Service announced its intention to appeal the ruling. Attorney Paul Jarvis told London’s High Court on Wednesday, January 22nd, that authorization was only required when O’Hagan first appeared in court, meaning the case could proceed.

Níkab, known for its politically charged lyrics and support for the Palestinian cause, has stated that the case is an attempt to distract from what they describe as British complicity in the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Gaza. Israel strongly denies allegations of genocide in the coastal enclave.

Earlier, Níkab stated that the flag was thrown onto the stage during their performance and that they “do not and have never supported Hamas or Hezbollah.”
