Ratatan Cancels Nintendo Switch and PS4 Versions to Prioritize Next-Gen Performance

The development team behind the rhythmic rogue-lite Ratatan has officially announced the cancellation of the game’s release for the original Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 4. In an update shared via the project’s Kickstarter page on April 3, 2026, developers revealed that the decision was made to ensure the title meets the highest possible quality standards on supported platforms.

The pivot comes after extensive discussions with publisher Game Source Entertainment. According to the team, the projected sales volume for legacy hardware would not have justified the licensing fees required to finalize those specific SKUs. By narrowing their focus to a smaller selection of platforms, the indie team aims to optimize the user experience for a full online title. This strategic shift reflects a growing trend in the industry where developers must balance wide accessibility against the technical and financial constraints of maintaining legacy hardware support.

Despite these cancellations, Ratatan is scheduled for a worldwide launch on July 16, 2026, for the Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S. The release date was first highlighted during a Nintendo Indie World Showcase, which premiered the Nintendo Switch 2 version of the game. For Switch 2 users, a physical edition featuring a traditional Game Card will be available on July 16 for $40. A Digital Deluxe version, too priced at $40, will be offered with additional accessories and weapons.

Developed by Ratata Arts and TVT Co., and featuring Sony Japan alumni including Hiroyuki Kotani, Ratatan is a spiritual successor to the Patapon series. The project is backed by a strong community foundation, having raised over $1.4 million from more than 14,000 backers during its 2023 Kickstarter campaign. The game previously entered Steam Early Access in September 2025, achieving over 100,000 sales in its first month on PC.

The developers have stated that they will initiate a support ticket process to explore options for players who do not own the supported next-generation hardware.
