First Leg Matches of the UEFA Champions League Round of 16 Concluded

Real Madrid Advances, No Comeback for City

Manchester City’s hopes of a dramatic comeback lasted just twenty minutes. That’s how long it took for Bernardo Silva to concede a penalty, handling Vinícius Júnior’s shot on the goal line. The resulting penalty, converted by Vinícius, sent Real Madrid through to the quarterfinals with far less drama than many expected.

As Real Madrid celebrated their quarterfinal berth and another victory at the Etihad, Pep Guardiola was visibly frustrated after watching his game plan unravel so quickly. Bernardo Silva received the first red card of his career, conceded a penalty, and left his team facing an almost impossible task: overcoming a four-goal deficit with ten men.

Guardiola ironically smiled and gestured emphatically to the fourth official as he received a caution for his conduct. The monumental comeback Manchester City desperately sought, and that has eluded Guardiola throughout his career, evaporated before their eyes.

City needed a fast start to even initiate to contemplate overturning a 3-0 first-leg deficit, but nearly fell behind inside the first minute. Federico Valverde had an easier chance than any of his three goals at the Santiago Bernabéu a week prior, but fired weakly into the arms of Gianluigi Donnarumma.

City’s hopes were quickly dashed as Real Madrid countered, and Vinícius ran down the wing, exhausting Matheus Nunes before hitting the post. Arda Güler collected the rebound and attempted a cross, but Bernardo Silva’s desperate attempt to clear the ball off the line resulted in a penalty. Vinícius stepped up and converted, giving Real Madrid a commanding lead.

The atmosphere at the Etihad shifted dramatically as Real Madrid fans began chanting “We are the Kings of Europe” and “This is how Madrid wins” with every touch of the ball.

Guardiola sank onto the bench, watching his plans crumble. The elusive comeback he craved was slipping away, reinforcing the sentiment that “Real Madrid is a different beast in the spring.”

This momentum allowed Real Madrid to play with confidence, even conceding a goal to Erling Haaland before halftime. However, the goal wasn’t enough for City to mount a serious challenge with a man down.

Álvaro Arbeloa had the luxury of leaving Kylian Mbappé on the bench upon his return from injury, with Jude Bellingham also expected to be fit for the likely quarterfinal matchup against Bayern Munich. The Spanish giants controlled the tempo and looked dangerous on every attack.

City’s attacks were often thwarted, with attempts from Doku and Marmoush ruled offside. Vinícius sealed the victory with a late goal in the 92nd minute, adding another chapter to Real Madrid’s Champions League legacy.

The only concern for Real Madrid came with an injury to Thibaut Courtois, who requested a substitution at halftime due to an adductor issue. Andriy Lunin replaced him and proved reliable when called upon.

Real Madrid heads into April still alive in La Liga and the Champions League, with a favorable quarterfinal draw likely against Bayern Munich. City, meanwhile, has virtually lost the Premier League title race and is now out of the Champions League. With only the League Cup and FA Cup remaining, Guardiola faces the prospect of a trophyless season, potentially his last with the club.

PSG Dominates Chelsea, Secures Quarterfinal Spot

Paris Saint-Germain completed the tie after a 5-2 first-leg advantage, comfortably defeating Chelsea 0-3 at Stamford Bridge thanks to goals from Khvicha Kvaratskhelia and Bradley Barcola in the opening fifteen minutes, and a second-half strike from Senny Mayulu, securing their place in the quarterfinals and continuing their pursuit of a title defense.

Just six minutes into the match, a long ball from goalkeeper Matvey Safonov sparked the opening goal. Mamadou Sarr misjudged the bounce, allowing Kvaratskhelia to dribble past him and slot the ball into the net for the visitors.

PSG doubled their lead eight minutes later with a well-executed counterattack finished by Barcola, effectively sealing their progression to the next round.

The Chelsea faithful were silenced, with only the chants of the traveling support accompanying PSG’s sustained possession.

PSG nearly extended their lead further, but Barcola’s shot went wide and Joao Neves was denied by Robert Sánchez, who started in goal in place of the unavailable Filip Jorgensen.

Chelsea responded with a renewed effort, with Joao Pedro receiving a through ball and creating space, but Safonov was equal to the challenge. Cole Palmer followed with a shot that was brilliantly saved by the Russian goalkeeper.

Safonov continued to frustrate Chelsea, denying Jorrel Hato’s header from a corner. On the ensuing counterattack, Barcola was again stopped by Sánchez in a one-on-one situation.

In the second half, Senny Mayulu place the game completely out of reach in the 62nd minute with a stunning strike from outside the box.

Arsenal Advances, Looking Like Champions League Contenders

Leading comfortably in the Premier League, in the final of the League Cup, still alive in the FA Cup, and now among the eight best teams in Europe. Arsenal delivered a dominant performance against Bayer Leverkusen, securing their spot in the quarterfinals for the third consecutive year.

Despite a 1-1 draw in the first leg, secured by a controversial penalty in the final minutes, Arsenal showcased a different level of intensity and energy at home, benefiting from a rested squad after not playing a league match this weekend.

Janis Blaswich, the Bayer Leverkusen goalkeeper, was kept busy throughout the match, making several key saves to deny Arsenal’s early attempts to seize the lead.

The breakthrough finally came in the 36th minute when Gonçalo Inácio headed home a corner, giving Arsenal the advantage they deserved.

The second half saw Arsenal continue to dominate, with Declan Rice doubling the lead in the 63rd minute with a powerful strike from outside the box. The Emirates Stadium erupted as Arsenal moved closer to the quarterfinals.

Sporting Completes Comeback, Ends Bodo/Glimt’s European Run

Sporting Lisbon completed a remarkable comeback on Tuesday, defeating Bodo/Glimt to advance to the Champions League quarterfinals. After falling 3-0 in the first leg, Sporting secured a 5-0 aggregate victory in Lisbon, bringing an end to Bodo/Glimt’s impressive European journey.

The hosts came out with clear intent to overturn the deficit, demonstrating a more energetic and dynamic approach than they displayed in Norway. They were also rested, having not played a league match this weekend.

The match was marked by tension from the start, with the first yellow card being issued in the sixth minute to Blomberg for a foul on Araújo.

Sporting created several opportunities in the first half, but were initially frustrated by the Bodo/Glimt defense and goalkeeper. Luis Suárez had a particularly good chance in the 10th minute, but his shot was saved by Haikin.

The deadlock was broken in the 34th minute when Gonçalo Inácio headed home a corner, giving Sporting hope.

The second half saw Sporting continue to press, and Pedro Gonçalves extended their lead in the 61st minute. Luis Suárez then converted a penalty in the 78th minute, leveling the aggregate score.
