Champions League
Real Madrid took a major step toward the Champions League quarterfinals, defeating Manchester City 3-0 in the first leg of their Round of 16 matchup on Wednesday. Federico Valverde’s first-half hat trick propelled the record 15-time winners to a commanding lead. Meanwhile, Paris Saint-Germain dominated Chelsea with a 5-2 victory.
This marks the fifth consecutive year that Real Madrid and Manchester City have faced each other in the Champions League knockout stage. Real Madrid now appears well-positioned to advance for the fourth time, and a third year in a row. Following a 6-1 win over Atalanta Bergamo, the Spanish giants are likely to face Bayern Munich in the quarterfinals.
Real Madrid was without several key players, including David Alaba, who has been dealing with calf issues, as well as Jude Bellingham and star forward Kylian Mbappe.
Valverde’s Brilliance Completes Hat Trick
With their top scorer sidelined, captain Valverde took charge of the attack. The 27-year-old Uruguayan opened the scoring in the 20th minute, capitalizing on a long ball from goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois and skillfully dribbling past Manchester City’s Gianluigi Donnarumma. Seven minutes later, a deflected pass from Vinicius Junior fell perfectly into Valverde’s path, and he fired a left-footed shot into the right corner to double Real Madrid’s advantage.
The highlight of the night came in the 42nd minute with a stunning goal: after a clever chipped pass from Brahim Diaz, Valverde deftly controlled the ball past Marc Guehi and volleyed it home with his second touch.
Vinicius had a golden opportunity to extend the lead to 4-0 after the break. He was brought down by Donnarumma in the penalty area, but the City goalkeeper redeemed himself by saving the resulting penalty in the 58th minute.
PSG Finish Strong Against Chelsea
Chelsea twice equalized in a rematch of the Club World Cup final, which they won 3-0 against the Londoners last summer in the USA. However, PSG ultimately emerged as clear victors. Bradley Barcola headed home a Joao Neves cross to give PSG the lead in the 10th minute. Before halftime, World Footballer of the Year Ousmane Dembele added another for the Parisians with a brilliant solo effort (40th minute) after the teams were tied 1-1 with a goal by Malo Gusto (28th minute).
Enzo Fernandez leveled the score again in the 57th minute, but a turnover by Chelsea goalkeeper Filip Jörgensen led to the decisive goal. Barcola dispossessed the Danish keeper and Vitinha calmly chipped the ball into the net (74th minute).
PSG, who had narrowly advanced past AS Monaco in the play-off round, weren’t finished. Chwitscha Kwarazchelia added a brace to secure a commanding lead heading into next Tuesday’s second leg. The Georgian scored from the edge of the box in the 86th minute and then tapped in a cross from Achraf Hakimi in the 94th minute.
