A demo for the highly anticipated cyberpunk platformer Replaced will be available on PC starting February 11, developer Sad Cat Studios has announced. The game, set in an alternate 1980s America ravaged by a nuclear catastrophe, puts players in control of R.E.A.C.H. (Research Engine for Altering and Composing Humans), an artificial intelligence unexpectedly trapped within a human body.
Replaced blends cinematic exploration with speedy-paced, free-flow combat inspired by titles like the Batman: Arkham series. Players will navigate a dystopian world while R.E.A.C.H. Grapples with unfamiliar instincts, emotions, and questions of identity. The game’s unique setting and narrative are indicative of a growing trend toward more mature and philosophical themes in the gaming space.
Hand-Crafted Pixel Art
Sad Cat Studios has emphasized the game’s handcrafted design, combining pixel art with modern visuals and a synthwave-inspired soundtrack to create a distinctive atmosphere. “All of the animations in the game are hand-drawn, meaning we didn’t grab any shortcuts when creating these hundreds of pixel sprites,” the development team noted in a blog post. “We may employ other tools and techniques in the future, but for Replaced, we genuinely wanted to pay homage to this craft.”
Originally revealed at E3 2021, Replaced faced multiple delays due to the impact of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. The studio, with team members in Belarus, relocated to Cyprus in 2022 to ensure the safety of its personnel. Replaced is scheduled for release on March 12 across PC (Steam, Epic, and GOG), Xbox Series X/S, and Xbox Game Pass.
