“Resident Evil: Requiem” Blends Nostalgia and New Characters for Horror Fans
Capcom’s latest installment in the long-running “Resident Evil” franchise, “Resident Evil: Requiem,” aims to recapture the series’ survival-horror roots while introducing a new protagonist and leveraging successful elements from past games. The release demonstrates the ongoing evolution of the survival horror genre, continually refining its approach to suspense and player engagement.
The game features Leon S. Kennedy, a charismatic character celebrated for his appearance in “Resident Evil 4,” where he famously battled enemies with a chainsaw. “Resident Evil: Requiem” also incorporates the first-person perspective found in “Resident Evil 7: Biohazard” (2017) and “Resident Evil: Village” (2021), which brought back a sense of immersion that resonated with fans.
Alongside Kennedy, players will control Grace Ashcroft, a young FBI analyst investigating a series of mysterious deaths among survivors of the T-Virus outbreak in Raccoon City. This outbreak, a cornerstone of the series since “Resident Evil 2,” forms the backdrop for Ashcroft’s investigation.
Ashcroft’s personal story intertwines with the larger narrative, as she grapples with the trauma of losing her mother, Alyssa, an investigative journalist featured in “Resident Evil: Outbreak” (1998). Her search for answers leads her back to the Wrenwood Hotel, the site of her mother’s death eight years prior.
According to reports, “Resident Evil: Requiem” is being described as a “best-of” compilation of the series’ strengths. Additional content, including a story DLC, a mini-game, and a photo mode, are also planned. PCGH notes that a story add-on is scheduled for release in May, with further content to follow. Handelsblatt describes the game as a “spell formula for the horror genre.”
The game also includes statistical data for players to review, as reported by Hardwareluxx.
