Capcom’s latest installment in the iconic survival horror franchise, Resident Evil Requiem, is off to a strong start in the United Kingdom. According to reports, physical sales of the game have surpassed those of both Resident Evil Village and the Resident Evil 4 remake during their respective launch windows.
The Game Business founder and editor Christopher Dring reports that this success comes despite a broader decline in physical game sales in recent years, making the achievement particularly noteworthy. The ninth main entry in the Resident Evil series launched on February 27, 2026, for Windows, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and Nintendo Switch 2.
Even as the strong performance is likely due to the quality of the game itself, the numbers suggest a continued demand for physical media among some gamers. What we have is especially significant five years after the release of Resident Evil Village and three years after the highly anticipated remake of Resident Evil 4.
Interestingly, the Nintendo Switch 2 doesn’t appear to be a major driver of these initial sales figures. Dring notes that the game’s first-week physical sales on the Switch 2 were comparable to those of Cyberpunk 2077 last year and outperformed Mario Tennis Fever.
The data is currently limited to the UK market, so broader trends remain to be seen. However, the figures indicate that physical game sales are not disappearing, and some consumers may be opting for a physical copy over a digital download in this instance. The continued appeal of physical media highlights the enduring preferences of a segment of the gaming community.
Resident Evil Requiem features a new protagonist, FBI analyst Grace Ashcroft, alongside returning character Leon S. Kennedy. Gameplay alternates between the two characters, offering both survival horror and action-oriented experiences. You can learn more about the game in our review.
