Public Health Alert: Rising Cases of Mpox, Malaria, and Leptospirosis in Réunion

Health officials in Réunion are monitoring increases in several infectious diseases, including Mpox (formerly known as monkeypox), malaria, and leptospirosis. The situation highlights the importance of vigilance and preventative measures, particularly for travelers to and from the region.

As of February 27, 2026, six cases of Mpox have been identified in Réunion, two of which were imported, according to a recent bulletin from the regional public health authority. These cases were detected between epidemiological weeks 5 and 8 of 2026.

Leptospirosis cases are also on the rise, with 39 cases reported since the beginning of the year. Health authorities describe a significant resurgence of the disease, which is linked to seasonal factors. As of February 26, 2026, 58 cases of leptospirosis had been confirmed, resulting in one death and 14 hospitalizations, five of which required critical care, according to reports. This increase underscores the demand for heightened awareness and preventative measures.

Malaria cases, primarily imported from the Comoros, have also increased. Nine cases were reported in December and 18 in January, with a slight decrease to five cases in February. Health officials are urging travelers returning from malaria-endemic areas to seek immediate medical attention if they develop a fever, as any fever upon return should be considered potential malaria until proven otherwise, as reported by Zinfos974.

Other monitored conditions include chikungunya and dengue, with sporadic cases reported since the beginning of the year – 12 cases of each have been detected locally. Health indicators for influenza and bronchiolitis remain low, while COVID-19 indicators are rising but with limited severe health impacts. Gastrointestinal illnesses remain stable.

The convergence of these health signals emphasizes the importance of ongoing surveillance and public health preparedness in Réunion. These findings could inform public health strategies and resource allocation to effectively manage and mitigate these infectious disease risks.
