Rhenser Mineralbrunnen Files for Insolvency | Bankruptcy News

Rhenser Mineralbrunnen, a prominent German mineral water producer, has filed for insolvency as rising costs and shrinking margins put the company in financial distress.

The company initiated the proceedings on March 3, 2026, at the Koblenz Local Court, citing intense competition in the beverage market, increased transportation expenses, persistently low margins, and consumer reluctance to spend, according to a company statement. The move underscores the challenges facing European beverage companies amid a difficult economic climate.

Rhenser Mineralbrunnen, which has been operating since 1862, offers a diverse portfolio of products, including high-quality mineral water, organic beverages, and low-sugar soft drinks.

Approximately 140 employees are affected by the insolvency filing, the company confirmed. However, wages and salaries for March, April, and May 2026 are secured through insolvency benefits, the company stated.

Despite the insolvency proceedings, the company’s operations are continuing uninterrupted. “Our primary goal is to stabilize operations and create the conditions for the sustainable continuation of the company,” explained preliminary insolvency administrator Alexander Jüchser. “To this end, we are currently gaining a comprehensive overview of the economic situation and conducting discussions with customers, suppliers, and other business partners.”

Jüchser, of LIESER Rechtsanwälte, was appointed as the provisional insolvency administrator by the court, as reported by SWR Aktuell. The Gewerkschaft NGG (Food, Beverage and Hospitality Union) expressed hope for the company’s rescue, noting the overall prosperity of the German mineral water market.

Rhenser previously underwent a restructuring process in 2016, according to Lebensmittelpraxis. The company is now focused on preparing for the warmer months and building up inventory, as the winter season typically sees lower sales. Jüchser expressed confidence that Rhenser’s strong regional ties and established customer relationships – including major retailers like Rewe and Globus – will support the company through this period.
