Rio de Janeiro officials raised the city’s alert level to Stage 2 on Wednesday, December 17, 2025, at 6:45 a.m. local time due to reports of heavy rainfall and strong winds. The move signals a potential increase in disruptions as the city prepares for continued inclement weather.
According to the Rio Alert System, the heaviest rainfall is currently concentrated in the North and West zones of the city.
While the most intense rain cells have moved away from the city center and are now impacting areas in the Serrana region and Itaboraí, residents can expect overcast skies with light to moderate rain and moderate to strong wind gusts throughout the day.
Authorities are advising residents to continue with their daily routines but remain vigilant and monitor weather updates from the Rio Alert System. Citizens are also encouraged to stay informed through official news sources and the city’s operations center.
Residents can register for SMS alerts from the Civil Defense by texting their postal code to 40199. The service is free. The COR.Rio app, available for Android or iOS, also provides real-time information. Emergency numbers to keep handy are 193 for the Fire Department and 199 for Civil Defense.
