Richard Ríos scored his fourth goal for Benfica on Saturday, March 14th, but it wasn’t enough to secure a comfortable victory. The Colombian international found the back of the net in the 50th minute of Benfica’s Primeira Liga match against their opponents, who had taken an early lead in the 7th minute.
Benfica ultimately secured a hard-fought win thanks to a stoppage-time goal from Franjo Ivanović in the 96th minute, according to reports from AS. The victory moves José Mourinho’s side to 62 points and into third place in the league standings, trailing Porto and Sporting.
Ríos’ Goal Not Enough to Silence Critics
Despite getting on the scoresheet and sparking his team’s comeback, Ríos faced criticism from local media for his overall performance. Reports highlighted errors in his game, even in the build-up to his goal.
While Ríos maintained an 83% passing accuracy, according to match statistics, Portuguese outlet A Bola focused on his mistakes in their player ratings.
“He rushed too much, the ball seemed to burn him under pressure, he made too many bad decisions, missed passes, rarely played directly towards the opponent, and couldn’t cover ground with the ball. He was in the right place to head in Schjelderup’s corner for the equalizer, but didn’t jump,” A Bola wrote, giving Ríos a rating of 4.
Expectations are high in Portugal, and Ríos will require to elevate his game to consistently earn positive reviews. Beyond scoring, he’ll be expected to contribute more significantly to his team’s build-up play and provide defensive support when needed.
