Rising Rates of Colorectal Cancer Prompt Increased Awareness Efforts

Concerns about increasing colorectal cancer diagnoses, particularly among younger adults, are driving a push for greater awareness and early detection. Health officials and medical professionals are emphasizing the importance of understanding risk factors and participating in recommended screenings.

On March 11, 2026, AZ Sint-Blasius in Dendermonde, Belgium, will host a free information session titled “Je darmen onder de loep: over darmen en darmkanker” (roughly translated as “A closer look at your intestines: about intestines and colorectal cancer”). The event aims to educate the public about colorectal cancer prevention, early detection, and treatment options. Registration is required, with a maximum of 90 attendees allowed, and individuals must register separately even if attending with a partner.

The session will feature presentations from leading gastroenterologists and a registered dietitian. Dr. Lars Triest, a gastroenterologist, will discuss the status of the colorectal cancer screening program in the region. Dr. Pieterjan Perremans, also a gastroenterologist, will share essential information about colorectal cancer. Evelien Rentmeester, a dietitian, will focus on a gut-friendly diet and its role in preventing colorectal cancer.

Attendees will also have the opportunity to tour the gastroenterology department at AZ Sint-Blasius and visit information booths staffed by dietitians and oncology coaches. The event is an initiative of Blasius Academie in collaboration with ELZ Dender and the City of Dendermonde.

Recent data suggests a trend toward younger individuals being diagnosed with colorectal cancer, prompting discussions about potentially adjusting screening guidelines. Even as current recommendations generally begin screenings at age 50, some experts are debating whether earlier screening is warranted. However, officials emphasize the need to improve participation rates among the currently eligible population – men and women aged 50 to 74 – in the biennial stool test program.

“In Dendermonde and surrounding communities, about two-thirds of people aged 50 to 74 participate in the screening program,” said Dr. Lars Triest. “With this information evening, we want to inform the population well and remove any possible doubts or barriers.”

The information session will take place from 7:30 PM to 9:00 PM at AZ Sint-Blasius, Kroonveldlaan 50, 9200 Dendermonde, Belgium. Those seeking more information or wishing to register can call 052 25 23 74. More details about the event are available on the AZ Sint-Blasius website.

March is internationally recognized as colorectal cancer awareness month, highlighting the critical role of early detection in improving treatment outcomes and survival rates. Early detection through screenings like the stool test allows for less intensive treatment and faster recovery.
