Rising Psychosis Rates in Young People Linked to Cannabis Use

A growing number of young people are experiencing psychotic disorders, according to recent observations in Australia, Denmark and now Canada. A study conducted in the Canadian province of Ontario revealed a particularly noticeable trend (CMAJ 2026; DOI: 10.1503/cmaj.250926). This increase in mental health concerns among younger populations warrants further investigation to understand contributing factors and develop effective interventions.

Researchers suggest that increasing substance utilize, particularly cannabis, may be a contributing factor. Mental health professionals have reported a rise in cannabis consumption among young people experiencing psychosis for several years, as highlighted in a study using data from Denmark. The higher concentration of the psychoactive drug tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) is of particular concern, as reported by Deutschlandfunk.
