A building collapsed in Rome on Sunday, March 22, 2026, following an explosion in the Ponte Galeria area. The incident occurred on Via Tavagnasco and appears to have affected three structures, prompting a large emergency response. The collapse underscores the potential dangers of gas infrastructure in urban areas.

Explosion Caused by LPG Cylinder

Fire officials have determined that an explosion of a liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) cylinder caused the building to collapse, according to reports. The blast destroyed the walls of three adjacent homes and damaged parked vehicles. Local police are assisting with evacuation procedures and providing support to those displaced from nearby buildings, which have been deemed unsafe.

“Just before 1 p.m., I heard a huge boom and many windows in the house shattered. We were scared,” said a local resident who lives approximately 150 meters from the collapsed building. “Car alarms and home security systems went off simultaneously,” another resident reported. Debris from the collapsed building, including pieces of window frames, was scattered as far as 200 meters due to the force of the explosion.
