Roméo Lavia has been called up to the Belgium national team, providing a boost ahead of their crucial Euro 2027 qualifying match against Austria.

Lavia has been sidelined by recurring injuries since Domenico Tedesco took over as head coach in Germany, preventing his return to the national squad. While still working his way back to full fitness with Chelsea, he wasn’t initially expected to be included in the squad for this international window.

“I am closely following every player, and his talent is undeniable. But he hasn’t had much playing time to prove himself. He has spent more time in the infirmary than on the field. I don’t feel any urgency to select him now,” said Rudi Garcia regarding Lavia’s recent form.

However, Lavia has now received a call-up to the U21 team. While the Belgian federation has yet to officially confirm the move, it appears increasingly likely after Chelsea announced on their website that the player will depart to fulfill his international obligations.

The Chelsea midfielder wasn’t originally named to Gill Swerts’ U21 roster, but he could now play a role for the first time in four years.

Roméo Lavia has only made one appearance for the senior Belgium national team, playing 20 minutes in June 2022. This call-up provides a valuable opportunity for the team as they prepare to face Austria, who are currently level on points with Belgium and Scotland in the Euro 2027 qualifying group.
