Romania is preparing a strategic move in the natural gas market that could significantly impact prices for consumers. Energy Minister Bogdan Ivan announced that Romgaz will enter the gas supply market for consumers, following a similar model to that of Hidroelectrica.

Currently, Romgaz, which is state-owned, is only a gas producer and does not supply gas directly to the public. The company is expected to enter the natural gas market no later than next month, according to reports. This move comes as Romania prepares to end price caps on natural gas for consumers on April 1st.

“Romgaz will make an offer sometime in March. They are currently in the process of hiring people who will be exclusively dedicated to the supply segment, and a memorandum needs to be approved by the Romanian Government to allow for those hires. They have already purchased the software and have all the necessary licenses,” Minister Ivan stated on February 14, 2026.

The Energy Minister emphasized that Romgaz’s entry into the market will have a significant impact on costs and offers for consumers. The announcement reflects a broader trend of governments seeking to influence energy markets to protect consumers.

“The important thing is this: once they enter the market, following the Hidroelectrica model, they will be able to optimize costs significantly and automatically offer very fine deals. Just as Hidroelectrica is the reference price today on the consumer market, Romgaz will be on the natural gas market,” the minister explained.

Romgaz is expected to launch offers by March 31st, with a buffer of two to three weeks built in. “They will be able to offer as late as March 31st. I’ve also taken a buffer of 2-3 weeks. They are prepared to do this by the end of February,” Ivan added.

Romgaz’s entry into the supply segment for the population could shift the balance of power in the gas market and lead to more advantageous offers for households. The move is being closely watched as a potential game-changer in the Romanian energy landscape.
