‘Alien: Romulus’ Sequel Remains in Development, Key Visual Effects Designer Unconfirmed for Return

Development continues on a sequel to this year’s critically acclaimed sci-fi horror film Alien: Romulus, though key personnel decisions remain outstanding, potentially impacting the project’s timeline.

Visual effects designer Alec Gillis, known for his extensive work on both the Alien and Predator franchises – including recent projects like Predator: Badlands and Prey – revealed yesterday that he has not yet been contacted regarding his involvement in the Romulus follow-up. While confident he’ll be approached when pre-production ramps up, Gillis stated, “I have not, personally… Maybe there are people who are, but they’re not talking to me,” during a red carpet interview. Gillis’ company, Studio Gillis (formerly Amalgamated Dynamics), has contributed to the Alien universe since 1992’s Alien 3, and his expertise is highly sought after in the genre.

Director Fede Álvarez, who helmed Alien: Romulus, stepped down from directing duties in September but remains attached as a producer alongside Ridley Scott. He has completed the script for the sequel, but a replacement director has not been announced. The success of Alien: Romulus, which revitalized interest in the franchise, demonstrated the enduring appeal of the series and prompted Disney and 20th Century Studios to pursue a continuation of the story. Officials have not provided a timeline for the announcement of a new director or further details regarding the sequel’s production schedule, but Álvarez has indicated a desire to move forward quickly with the project. The continued development of the sequel signals a commitment to expanding the Alien universe following the positive reception to Romulus, which grossed over $154 million worldwide, according to Box Office Mojo.
