“Romy und Magda Schneider”: Documentary on a Unique Mother-Daughter Relationship

“My dearest Mamilein,” Romy wrote to her mother in her letters. But Mamilein was rarely around; film star Magda Schneider had little time for her daughter. Romy was raised by her grandparents, and later sent to boarding school, where she spent four years without visits, often left alone during the summer holidays.

Then, suddenly, her mother was omnipresent. Romy was overjoyed when she finally shared the screen with Magda for the first time in 1953, at the age of 14. The pair became a celebrated duo, with Magda rarely leaving Romy’s side, dictating which roles she would accept – often booking roles for herself alongside her daughter. Their move to Paris, following Magda’s relationship with Alain Delon, offered Romy an escape from her mother’s control.

Parts of Magda Schneider’s estate have recently come to light: film footage from Romy’s childhood and dozens of her letters to her mother. The documents suggest that the previously assumed rift between the two never fully materialized. Her mother remained Romy’s closest confidante, someone she turned to for comfort throughout her life. The documentary “Romy and Magda Schneider: Mother – Daughter – Rivals” is available to stream on Arte Mediathek until March 27th.

Sandra Voyter, her husband Samuel, and their eleven-year-old son Daniel live in an old farmhouse in the French Alps. Returning from a walk, Daniel finds his father lifeless in the snow. Samuel appears to have fallen from a roof window. An autopsy yields inconclusive results, with both accidental death and foul play considered possible. A friend who is a lawyer helps Sandra navigate the police questioning.

Was it murder or suicide? “Anatomy of a Fall” is a gripping drama that unfolds the events, blending courtroom proceedings, psychological insight, and a compelling mystery. Sandra must confront a public dissection of her complicated relationship with Samuel, as new evidence and possible scenarios emerge.

In the 15th century, Florence was a center of commerce, banking, and, above all, art. It was here that a gifted young artist named Michelangelo honed his craft, supported by the wealthiest and most powerful patron in the city, Lorenzo de Medici. When Leonardo da Vinci applied for a position at the court of Milan, he was aware that the Duke of Milan was constantly at war with other cities. Accordingly, he formulated his application letter.

It read: “I am a very good engineer and know what is important in battle. Do you need a cannon? I am your man. And, almost as an afterthought, at the very end: I can also create art for palaces.”

The focus is on the first superstars of the art world – Michelangelo, Leonardo, and Raphael – as well as their major works, their patrons, and the wars of that time. The documentary is available on Arte Mediathek until May 2nd.
